For the past three seasons, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have turned to Dolce\'s native Sicily as point of inspiration. For Spring 2013, we saw a collection channeling the fifties holiday postcard vibe, for Fall 2013-14 they looked to the exquisite Venetian and Byzantine mosaics of an ancient Cathedral, and this season they continue to surf the Sicilian wave. The theme of Spring 2014 was a trip to Sicily\'s Greek roots, which was inspired by four old photographs the designers picked up on one of their annual trips to the island. This was transcended to the catwalk by way of iconic prints that encompassed ancient amphitheatres and columns emblazoned on silk dresses and coats, and that were worked into the heels and shoes. Another theme, came in the form of floral appliqués, which were romantically embellished on silk flowing dresses as well as almond tree flower prints. It was an unconscious dream, they said, to rediscover ancient Sicily. Gold coins were blown up and featured as the focal point of many looks, whether as a medal-worthy belt cinching in romantic dresses at the waist, printed on mini flared dresses, or hanging as medallions from the neck. And then to the gold rush. The patent-leather-looking gold skirts, dresses, and coats were in fact made from lacquered silk hit the catwalk, in addition to a color palette of rich reds and deep greens adding yet another layer of lavishness to the already striking collection.
