'Presenting its SS20 Collection, BARRAGÁN continues an exploration of the meaning of “Mexicanity” as a playful approach to Mexican celebrations, expanding as abstractions on multiple levels. Spirals seen throughout the collection were borrowed from the ancient Mesoamerican tradition of Los Voladores de Papantla as its participants spin on-air, the motion of the skirts of Guadalajara folklore ballet, even the yellow carnation petals which seem to untwist as it opens, translated by taking the “proper” into something more psychedelic. Debuting knits that propose a modish approach to papel picado tradition, carrying a constant theme of bringing a contemporary and present-day view to folklore. Traveling along with the rich Mexican celebrations history, this collection envisions the modern version of Chinelo dancers from Tepoztlán Morelos with beaded blazers and embellished denim, elevating its construction and design masterfully. Persistently unapologetic and sexy, zebra prints and thongs, bright colors, volumes and textures that reveal excellence in design, its symbolism can always be traced back to its motherland, carried through accessories and shoes that contrast together into a fresh taste Mexico in New York.
