Exclusive highlights from the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty Fashion Gala and opening party, including interviews with special guests. Presented by American Express and Kering vam.ac.uk/savagebeauty Transcript: Nicholas Coleridge: Around the world there are five or six really stellar shows, and this is clearly going to be one of them. And it’s exciting to see old friends of Lee McQueen, his family, all of them coming to this very very glamorous gala right here in the middle of town. Annabelle Neilson: This was where Lee would have been most happy that his work was being shown. To him the V&A was a place that he would come to and find inspiration. He loved London and I’m so proud to be here for him. Victoria Beckham: We’re just really really excited to be here, and just glad it’s come to London which is where the genius was from. Poppy Delevingne: I think he drew a lot of his inspiration from being a Londoner, so it’s really befitting and exciting that the V&A is having this exhibition on such a large scale. Naomi Campbell: I have never met anyone like Alexander McQueen. He was a genius, he was innovative, he was a caring friend. I miss him very much. Lisa Gregg: What drew us to him was just his innovation, his passion for creativity, you know, challenging the status quo, as Lee would want to do. But also his uncompromising demand for quality. That’s something that we share as a brand, so it just made absolute sense for us to support him then and also continue that through the Savage Beauty support. Erin O’Connor: He radicalised the idea of what beauty means, the perception of how we see things. And so, it’s right that he is honoured and celebrated this evening. Suzy Menkes: Alexander McQueen was not just a fashion designer, he was an artist. And it’s so obvious when you look at this exhibition, such extraordinary imagination, such an ability to see beyond mere clothes. That’s his legacy Laura Carmichael: I love it all. I love the tartan. The kilty vibe. Stella Tennant: A lot of the work is really sculptural, the shoes and the hats and the jewellery. Francois-Henri Pinault: Well it’s all about poetry, it’s all about uniqueness, and couture. Nadja Swarovski: If there’s one person that I could credit for bringing Swarovski back to the forefront of fashion, it is Alexander McQueen. What he did with our product was so groundbreaking. It was phenomenal. He was a creative genius. Gary McQueen: To the family it means a big deal. Lee would be thrilled at the idea of having his work exhibited at the V&A. Sarah Burton: London was Lee’s home and it’s where he was inspired, where he was born, where he lived, where he loved to be. And I think it feels like a real homecoming.
