(24 Jan 2018) JEAN PAUL GAULTIER PAYS HOMAGE TO PIERRE CARDIN The great French fashion designer, Pierre Cardin, now 95 years old, sat front row at the Jean Paul Gaultier SS18 couture show on Wednesday (24JAN2018) afternoon, and saw a collection that Gaultier called an "Hommage to Pierre Cardin." Afterwards, Gaultier explained that he got his start in the business by working for Cardin. While still at school he sent the older designer some sketches, and by chance was hired on his 18th birthday. Cardin pointed out that this collection was an expression of Gaultier's unique talent and creativity, not at all an imitation of Cardin. Indeed, the show displayed all of Gaultier's incredible skill, with braided mousseline, embroidery, accordIon ribbons - and an incredible men's suit made from 1,500 meters of fringe meticulously embroidered into fabric. Gaultier referenced the 1960s in various ways, through fringe, black-and-white kinetic art, lots of jewelry, and the hairstyles like a Vidal Sassoon bowl topped by a nod to the beehive. Canadian supermodel Coco Rocha walked (and danced) the runway with her adorable little daughter, followed by Gaultier's bride - in white and fringe, of course.
