Various models on the catwalks STORYLINE: Fashion industry representatives and the Italian government signed a self-regulating code for Italy's highly competitive fashion industry on Friday, joining forces in a campaign to combat the phenomenon of anorexic and very thin fashion models. Italian Youth Policy and Sports Minister Giovanna Melandri and Mario Boselli, the president of the Italian Fashion Chamber, jointly signed the code, which calls for more attention to be given to models with a """"full-bodied"""" image and a greater commitment to add larger sizes to fashion collections. The code also requires models to provide medical proof that they are not suffering from eating disorders and bans models under 16-years-old from the catwalk. Melandri, who is herself known for her fashionable outfits, said it was possible to see the difference between models who are naturally thin and those who are making themselves ill to stay slim. """"There is a possibility to trace a difference, and trace a border line between a nice skinny girl and a sick girl. We are not imposing standards or aesthetics, we are asking the Italian fashion business to at least try and develop a differentiated idea of beauty,"""" she said. In September, Madrid's Fashion Week banned models with a body mass index of less than 18. Body mass index is a calculation doctors normally apply to study obesity, and anyone with an index below 18.5 is considered underweight. Boselli said that body mass index should not be the only indicator of a model's health and suitability. """"""""Are we testing also (British fashion model) Naomi Campbell? Probably not. Naomi Campbell is allegedly under 18 as body mass, but as minister Melandri says, we must take consideration not only of this aspect."""" The worldwide fashion industry was urged re-think its demand for very thin models, following the death of a Brazilian model on November 14, 2006.
