I mean a model has to be thin and tall."""" 10. Various of model on the catwalk MODELS TOO THIN FOR SPANISH FASHION WEEK The Spanish Fashion Week also known as Pasarela (catwalk) Cibeles started in Madrid on Monday after organisers of Spain's top annual fashion show rejected five models as too thin to appear in this year's event. Organisers acted on an earlier decision to bar extremely thin women from the catwalk. The show decided on September 8 not to allow women below a predetermined body mass to height ratio to take part. """"I think we had arrived at a point, probably without consciously knowing, where the girls almost had such a thin look that made them a hanger while a model in order to be seen can't be just a hanger with an skeletal look"""", said the director of the show. The doctors told journalists that of 68 models who were evaluated, five failed to meet the new criteria. Each model had been allowed to appear at the examination accompanied by an agent and a representative from the fashion industry. Show organisers said that some well-known models had not gone to the examination. """" My personal opinion is that it was a polemical step, hard for the designers, very hard for many models, I send from here a big kiss and all my support, but this could be a touch of attention to the young people"""", said Antonio Pernas, the first designer to show his collections this year. But some models such as Bimba Bose think anorexia and other nutritious related illness cannot exclusively be blamed on the models. """"This is an illness caused by other circumstances,"""" she said. She added that being thin didn't mean being anorexic. The show, which started on Monday and will end Friday, wants to project an image of beauty, elegance and health. In this spirit, a decision was taken to exclude models that paraded gaunt, emaciated styles. The show also banned makeup that makes models appear wan. The body mass index is a calculation doctors normally apply to study obesity. In metric it is obtained by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared. In the English system it is calculated by dividing weight in pounds by height in inches squared, and multiplying that total by 703.
