When I was about seven years old, Dad bought my first mandolin and in a short time I started playing it in church. I learned to play many instruments that way. When I was a teenager, I bought one of the first Wilcox-Gay Disc Recorders on the market after WWII and recording became a much loved hobby. One day a man came to the parsonage and asked if I would make some recordings for him. His daughter sang in schools and churches and he played the harmonica. When I learned who he was, I said I would because I\'d seen his daughter in the church. She had gotten saved a short time before this. We had not gotten acquainted yet, but I knew this would do the trick. Mr. Longest asked how much I would charge to record. I replied that if he wanted to buy the blank disc, I wouldn\'t charge him anything (as I said before, I had seen his daughter!) One afternoon, Mr.Longest brought Jean and some blank discs and of course they needed some extra music, which I was more than happy to provide. Before the recordings were finished, I was singing harmony with her. Jean was 13 and I was 15. After this we started singing together at CA rallies and churches. We were married when we were 16 and 18 years old. The Lord blessed us with five lovely children - three boys and two girls and all of them have been involved in playing and singing for the Lord. In April 1963, we started a group consisting of Jean and I, my niece Lorene, her husband Bill Lott, and our two oldest children Cal 13 and Karen 10. Soon my sister, Ethelene and her husband, George Richardson, joined us. Later, Lonnie Lott started playing the drums. With our four children and Bill and Lorene\'s three boys, we really made a big group. We named our group \"The Gospel Rhythm-Aires.\" We bought our first bus and on Oct 27, 63 we dedicated it, our lived and our instruments to the Lord\'s work. We traveled this way for almost two years, Jobs made it impossible for us to stay together in this fashion. Our children were too young to provide all the music and singing we needed, so my Mom and Dad joined us along with our pastor\'s son, Doug Morris, 15. Dad was 75 and had been retired several years. We \"refired\" him and he sang bass with us. With three teens in the group, Dad called himself an \"old teenager.\" Mom became the \"babysitter.\" Jim was 3.5 years old when DeAnna was born, so Mom had her hands full when we were \"up front.\" By the time Mom and Dad felt they were too old to travel anymore, the two oldest, Cal and Karen, were doing their share. Paul (our #2 son) began singing high tenor dropped to bass. When Paul was 14, the Gospel Music Ass. of Nashville claimed him to be the youngest bass in the business. Ken Rolens played with us quite often, making beautiful music on his Dobro. After we became one family, we were called the Harris Family so often so we changed our name to \"The Singing Harris Family.\" We started traveling in Canada and our two oldest children married Canadians. Karen became Mrs. Wayne Johnson and they have a lovely ministry doing Kid\'s Crusades. Cal married Joan Griffin and lives in B.C. God has blessed our family over the years., Now He\'s fulfilling a prophecy made on our dedication day in 63. \"I will take you over mountains, lands, and seas!\" God has blessed our ministry in the North American continent. Now He\'s blessing our overseas tours giving us His favor among the wonderful Christian people in Australia first of all. We\'re looking forward to spending the rest of our lives in His service. I\'m sure it will be just as exciting as this past twenty years has been.
