'This fashion film resonates with the themes and trends associated with my capstone project surrounding fashion and nostalgia of the 1990s. The trends I am focusing on in my capstone include grunge, realism photography and globalization. Grunge as an aesthetic was a pivotal time in fashion where deconstruction of highly glamourized ideals were being sent down high-fashion runways and caused a reaction of pure shock in the industry. Coinciding with the grunge revolution, the introduction of realism photography was being juxtaposed with the grunge aesthetic to showcase a paradox as to what had previously been seen on the pages of Vogue. This revolution was catapulted into international media due to the expanding communication and globalization in the 1990s. Through this video format I interpreted the techniques of realism photography whilst showcasing a grunge aesthetic and nostalgic cinematography. As a fashion creative, reproducing the zeitgeist of 90s fashion editorials and media in my own work, allows me as the interpreter to draw inspiration based on nostalgia, a key revelation of my capstone as to how nostalgia is and can be used as inspiration. This film follows a young woman meant to mimic the likes of 90s icons such as Courtney Love through exploration of the tortured creative soul. Beginning with a put together look featuring key grunge elements such as leather, lace and Mary Jane shoes, showcases a distraught artist trying to escape the eye of the camera. The monochromatic, black and white cinematographic style of this starting point relays the facade put on by artists of the 1990s as globalization made for more public invasion into their private lives. The next sequence put in colour showcases the young woman in a simple tank top and jeans in her own apartment as she deconstructs her look, allowing the camera to further seep into her private life. This specific sequence was inspired by the photo series Under Exposure by Corinne Day of supermodel Kate Moss in her own apartment which showcases a realist photographic style. In the third sequence we see the young woman further distraught and using smoking and drugs as an outlet and vice, a route in which a lot of 90s artists took to escape their own reality. This third sequence is edited with a VHS filter to mimic a home video to further push the boundaries of realism and privacy. She is wearing a silk dress and Dr. Martens, staples in the 90s Grunge aesthetic. Ultimately, as the video sequence rolls out, the young woman is distraught and evidently emotional and vulnerable, further pushing away from an idealistic world into that of realism and deconstruction.
