'Fashion is not to copy trends and other brands but to create your own unique brand as I did since 1984. Read more about what\'s on my mind....... I supplied my fashion design ranges when I was in my senior matric high school year as a method to add to my pocket money and to start to connect with potential clients. No, I did not have the opportunity to go and study fashion design as my single mother could not afford such expensive further education for me but bought me every possible book and magazine through which I could learn how to make patterns. Fortunately, my mother herself was very skilled at garment construction and sewing but was a manager in a large corporate company and could only assist on weekends. Some designers are successful by following trends and gathering ideas from fashion magazines, but that is not what I would call an \"authentic\" designer such as Coco Chanel or Audrey Hepburn that are two of my favorite role models and fashion icons. Women are created to love beautiful things and fashion is part of who we as women are. It was always a compliment to me when men can appreciate the beauty of women\'s clothing and femininity. No wonder some of the best fashion designers are men who are more in tune with their feminine side and who understand a women\'s figure and sense of beauty. I am not referring to men who use women as sex objects and are exposed naked on runways. I can\'t recall that Audri Hepburn or Coco Channel had any fashion ranges that exposed women naked on runways. What a sad sad situation that the fashion industry is to blame for women\'s distorted self-images and why most young women suffer from all kinds of eating disorders. Being a fashion designer requires much more than only designing, sketching cutting, and sewing but it requires business skills and other management skills in order to make a success of a fashion manufacturing business. I ventured from Hautocutre designer into Corporate fashion designer and supplier to corporate clothing companies as well as to the presidential offices and private home staff members. Most women in South Africa who were employed by clothing factories don\'t even know how to become an entrepreneur or how to cost a garment. It is truly sad what has become of the fashion and textile industry in South Africa but we should not fall prey to mass retail outlets and china imports. My advice to new fashion designers in South Africa: Study through international institutions if you do not have a personal coach and mentor as I had in my life. The fashion industry is not an easy industry and it takes hard work and very long hours on your feet. It is more challenging these days with China and the eastern manufacturers who try to take the monopoly of garment supply in the world. But the need for exclusive design for special occasions will hopefully not vanish. You have to be one step ahead in your service, ideas and standards.'
